Inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s jitterbug mechanism, I developed a higher-dimensional counterpart of the concept. The resulting artefact – the
Jitterbox
, is an example of an auxetic material (i.e. has a negative Poissot ratio). When stretched, an auxetic material becomes thicker perpendicular to the applied force, unlike normal materials that contract.
